Meet Julie, the woman behind Jewel's

I was born in Australia and set off in my early 20's on what was meant to be a journey around the world. Somewhere along the way I fell in love with the Netherlands, and three decades later, it is still the place I call home.

Raised by a single father, I learned early on to value independence, creativity, and finding my own way. These values, combined with my curiosity, have led me in many different directions over the years—from photography and design to DIY projects and working with natural materials.

Looking back, however, I've always been happiest when taking an idea and bringing it to life.

My Story so far

Curiosity, Creativity, and the Road Less Traveled

As a child, I was always imagining inventions, creating things, and wondering what would happen if I combined one idea with another. I loved the idea that something ordinary could become something wonderful with a little imagination.

As I got older, that same curiosity evolved into a love of problem-solving. Rather than simply accepting things as they were, I found myself looking for different approaches, better solutions, and creative ways to make use of what was already there.

Over the years, that has taken many different forms. I've built furniture, renovated rooms, designed interiors, created websites, photographed homes, and turned discarded materials into something beautiful and useful again.

If I see a beautiful piece of wood left on the side of the road, I rarely leave it there. My mind immediately starts imagining what it could become. That same curiosity and creativity eventually led me to wool.

Discovering Wool

When I first decided to create Jewel's Comfortwol, I began exploring the world of wool and working with raw fleece for the first time. What started as a search for the right material quickly grew into something much more.

I found myself falling in love with wool itself — its softness, its warmth, its natural beauty, and the way it felt on my fingertips. Here was a material that had been valued for generations, yet today it is often surprisingly overlooked. Despite being renewable, biodegradable, and naturally versatile, much of it never finds its way into useful products.

As I worked on creating Jewel's Comfortwol, I was also surprised to discover how few people seemed to know about comfort wool. Outside of a relatively small community of hikers, walkers, and foot-care professionals, it remained largely unknown despite its long history and practical uses.

The more I learned, the more interested I became—not only in the wool itself, but in the many ways it could be used to improve comfort and well-being. I also began to see opportunities to do things a little differently. One of those ideas was surprisingly simple: scent.

Comfort wool is often used on the feet, and it seemed perfectly natural to me that a product born from nature should be paired with natural scents. That idea eventually led me to essential oils and to the creation of variants such as cedar-sandal and baby-bath, each adding its own character while preserving the natural qualities of the wool itself.

A One-Woman Business

Today, Jewel's Comfortwol is very much a one-woman business and one of the many creative projects that have grown out of Gentlejewel Creations, my small business and home to my ideas and the creative projects that inspire me.

Every batch of wool is carefully sourced, washed, prepared, photographed, packed, and shipped by me. I designed the packaging, built the website, created the instruction videos, photographed the products, and wrote the product descriptions. From the first idea to the final package, every part of the process passes through my hands.

There's something deeply satisfying about knowing exactly where a product came from and how it was made from beginning to end. Every order represents hours of work, care, and attention to detail, and I'm genuinely grateful every time someone chooses to support my small business.

Finding Value in What Others Overlook

One thing that has remained constant throughout my life is an appreciation for things that still have value. Whether it's a piece of timber waiting to become furniture, an old basket given a new purpose, or wool that can be transformed into something soft and useful, I love discovering possibilities where others might see waste.

That philosophy extends to every part of my wool preparation process. Not every fibre ends up in a packet of Jewel's Comfortwol, but I try to ensure that as little as possible goes to waste. Wool that isn't suitable for my products often finds a second purpose in the garden, where it can help improve the soil and retain moisture, or is shared with others who can put it to good use in their own creative projects.

Even during the washing process, I try to make use of what would normally be discarded. The nutrient-rich wash water often finds its way into my garden, where it helps nourish flowers, shrubs, and trees.

I've always believed that useful things deserve to be appreciated, cared for, and used well.

Looking Ahead

While comfort wool is the heart of Jewel's today, creativity has a habit of opening new doors.

In the future, I hope to expand the collection with other thoughtfully made products created from natural materials and guided by the same values that inspired Jewel's from the beginning: comfort, simplicity, beauty, and usefulness.

As Jewel's grows, I also hope to create opportunities for others. One of my hopes is to work with local women who may not always find opportunities in the traditional job market, but who still have valuable skills, experience, and plenty to contribute. Creating meaningful work while creating beautiful products feels like a natural extension of what Jewel's is all about.

Most of all, I hope that as Jewel's grows, it never loses the personal touch that makes it special. Because behind every package is a real person who made it, packed it, and sent it with care.

Thank you for being here.
